Transition Race - Snow Much Fun!

This past weekend I participated in one of the coolest, and craziest, races - the Mountain Creek Transition Race. The event celebrates the upcoming bike park season while transitioning from the end of ski season.

You race down a ski run on your bike.

How cool is that! Kudos to Mountain Creek for coming up with, and hosting, this nutty event. The way the race works is that you take one lap down the ski hill on your bike, weaving in and out of the gates. Then you take a second lap on your skis or snowboard on the exact same course. The combined times is your race time.

It was so good to see all the familiar faces on the hill. A bunch of people brought fat bikes, I don’t have one, and they definitely had the advantage as the sun softened the snow and course got rutted out. During early practice laps my bike seemed to have the advantage on the hard, crisp snow. Alas it did not stay that way.

I entered the race as a team with my dad. He’s really fast on a snowboard and it was fun to be racing with him (he says he hasn’t competed in a race since elementary school!). I took the bike lap and my dad did the second lap on his snowboard. The race was a fun sloppy mess and we came in 4th. I had a blast and can’t wait to see everyone on the trails once the snow melts.
